“HOLD ON LOOSELY”
The first hit from their 1981 album, Wild-Eyed Southern Boys, gets the video treatment and leaves much to the imagination. So many possibilities for this video and absolutely none taken. What about a couple’s enchanted ride through the Carolina mountains on a chopper, the babe clinging to the back of Donnie V.Z. or a cuter-fill in? Or maybe a day at the carnival? Donnie and the boys take their dates on the big, scary rollercoaster at the state fair. And as the chicks scream in terror, .38 Special just laugh and laugh the sadistic laughter of wild-eyed southern boys. Later, they make it up to their babes with elephant ears and stuffed hippos in tuxedos. Now, that’s a vision.
Instead, the viewer suffers through some rather ho-hum live footage. The only true focal points being Donnie’s peach poet blouse and the dude in the rust-colored pants. He, at least, tries to rock out during the song’s outro. Although he succeeds, ultimately , it’s too late. They’ve already let me slip away.
