“SECOND CHANCE”
Until very recently, I had no idea that .38 Special was responsible for this adult contemporary wonder. This is quite a departure from the championing of promiscuity and drunken trashiness that was their previous video. This is a solemn affair of the heart. A mature, black-and-white plea to the band’s betrayed love.
Watch as they smolder awkwardly for the camera, making intense appeals for tender reconciliation from the one they’ve cheated on because, well, “she was willing…and that’s all there is to say.” Why is the default setting for any music video in an abandoned warehouse surrounded by crates, boxes, and other dangerous woodwork? Is it supposed to be emblematic of a love affair in transition? Journey’s “Separate Ways” is clearly the forerunner of this phenomenon.
But really, just look at those unnerving close-ups of their mugs! I wouldn’t trust any of them. I’ve noted previously that they are for the most part nondescript everydudes, but looking at their creepily earnest visages, I’ve also concluded that they are nondescript dudes who are better left seen from afar.
