This fantastic post reminded me of something: Whitesnake’s “Is This Love” has consistently rocked my world since I was seven years old. I realize that the actual song barely rocks at all—especially when compared to the epic “Still of the Night”—but the fact remains that I find this song irresistible. If the iPod is on shuffle, as is my bad habit, I will never, ever skip “Is This Love”. I listen to it often at home and take real pleasure out of creating playlists that center around its sultry magic. I become giddy if it randomly appears on Metal Mania at 2 am. It is, without a doubt, an unheralded classic.
There is something ineffably captivating about the way David Coverdale sings this power ballad. His voice is muted with vulnerable restraint during the verses, a quiet, seductive plea. But as he slowly opens up during the chorus to ask himself that crucial rhetorical question, his voice growing throatier with longing for Tawny Kitaen’s stems, he reveals just how unsure he is that his feelings are reciprocated. Beneath that wild mane, there is an insecure boy heady with infatuation. And aren’t Coverdale and Kitaen a match made in home perm heaven? It’s really a sight to behold—all that hair flying around as their limbs intertwine.
