A-ha’s “Living a Boy’s Adventure Tale” is one of my all-time favorite songs. It far surpasses “Take on Me” on basically every level albeit the latter earns extra points for venturing into uncharted territory with its epic video. Despite “Take on Me” being universally recognized as the 80s one hit wonder juggernaut, “LABAT” uncannily sounds like nostalgia feels. There really is no better way for me to say it. Its echo is that of a hundred memories swelling before your eyes in cinematic black-and-white in the dead of winter, which is, in my opinion, the most nostalgic of seasons. I know some argue that heralding nostalgia for its own sake is lazy and misguided. But I stand by “LABAT” as a cultural touchstone of what sentimentality raised to dramatic heights can accomplish when artfully done. The song is current in its reverence for all the synthpop grandiosity of its time and simultaneously reveals its age with understated elegance. I enjoy the pairing of this song with footage of a young Michael J. Fox navigating his way through time in Back to the Future. It works on a literal, content-based level, but also gets at this idea of nostalgia functioning as a way of unifying personal experiences with collective cultural experiences and re-evaluating these experiences through a newly presented context. When placed in the context of this video, “LABAT” is given new life while still remaining firmly rooted in the past. It’s also just an awesome find via youtube that I wanted to share.
